Protein density vs total protein
The difference between grams of protein and protein per calorie — and when each matters.
Published
Two foods can both be “high protein” in different ways. Total protein is grams of protein in a given amount. Protein density is protein relative to energy — grams of protein per 100 kcal.
When density matters
If you are managing calories while keeping protein high, density is the better lens. Lean options like egg whites, white fish, and shellfish rank near the top for protein per 100 kcal, even when their total protein per 100 g is not the highest.
When total matters
If your goal is simply to reach a protein target, total protein per serving is what counts. Foodatron shows both, and its rankings let you sort either way.
