What “per 100 g” means

Why Foodatron shows nutrition per 100 g, and how to read it for real portions.

Published

Foodatron’s canonical basis is per 100 grams of the edible portion. It is a fixed, neutral yardstick: because every food is measured the same way, values are directly comparable.

“Per 100 g” is not a serving size. A serving of almonds might be 28 g and a serving of cooked rice 158 g. To see a real portion, use the serving selector on a food page — it scales the per-100 g values to the amount you choose.

Why not per serving by default?

Serving sizes are inconsistent across foods and sources, so comparing “per serving” can mislead. A larger serving can look higher in a nutrient simply because it weighs more. Per 100 g removes that distortion.

Edible portion

Values describe the part you actually eat. Where a food has an edible-yield ratio (for example, bone-in or drained items), that is modeled explicitly rather than assumed.
